Beyond apparel like shirts, socks and other performance wear, adidas produced 1 million pairs of shoes with Parley Ocean Plastic® in 2017, then 5 million in 2018, 11 million in 2019. Parley worked to develop the world’s first supply chain for upcycled marine waste and created Ocean Plastic® as a powerful symbol of change. Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality and environmental value. 

Upcycling artists are inspired by the textile waste they see, which is almost an unlimited resource at this point. They create with the intention to use what is already here. This process is important in the circular fashion movement, because it makes use of discarded textiles, giving these materials second lives. 

Because discarded textiles are not typically sheets of fabric, but rather articles of discarded clothing, a lot of creativity is required to transform materials into new fashionable pieces. This challenge is exciting for upcycling artists, as they are driven and inspired to create with what is in front of them and often don’t have much to lose in the process, since discarded materials are readily available and cheap. Because of this, upcycled clothing is often unique as each piece has been thoughtfully crafted into a new garment.

This product is made by creatively upcycling materials that would otherwise go to waste. This makes better use of resources like deadstock fabrics: leftovers from big production that are saved by re-using them.

Hemp comes from the Cannabis sativa plant, yes the same plant you are thinking of. Cannabis plants require low water and resources, and have been used to make clothing textiles for centuries. 

Hemp is a high-yielding crop, meaning it produces lots of product on a small amount of land. It doesn’t require any chemical pesticides, so it doesn't harm its environment. In fact, it actually helps replenish soil nutrients, regenerating soil, and removing it of toxins.
On top of that, hemp essentially absorbs more CO2 from the atmosphere than forests, which is why industrial hemp farms are what's called a “carbon sink”. 

Hemp has various natural advantages such as keeping you warm in winter, cool in summer and even protecting you from UV rays. Additionally, it's resistant to harmful microbes, mold, and mildew, which means hemp garments won’t smell bad, even after multiple days of wear. On top of that, it's extremely durable, so it can last for ages in your closet.
